CHAMPION OF TEXTILE
Anju Modi has a deep-rooted connection with textile as she submerged herself in the whole process. The designer had stayed in the homes of craftspeople and weavers and owe them for her success. She made herself familiar with indigenous weaves, from Kanchi silks to Kodali Karuppur saris. To further master her knowledge of textile, Anju went to Coimbatore and Salem in Tamil Nadu and interiors in Andhra Pradesh, observing Pochmupally ikats, Venkatagiri, and Mangalagiri weave, and Narayanpet saris.
HERITAGE
Her work is greatly inspired by a wide range of references from philosophy and architectural marvels of this great civilization. Anju Modi's work is a tribute to modern feminism. She feels proud to see more and more designers are working creatively and exploring the rich heritage of Indian designs and silhouettes.
MODERN DESIGN
Anju Modi has built a great library and techniques of textiles through in-depth research and by working closely with the craftsmen and weavers across the map of India. Each outfit from her is a work of art and reflects intricate decoration, celebrating the cultural history of various cities.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Anju Modi is a veteran of the Indian Fashion Industry and has been an active member since the 1990s. She had a deep love affair with textiles and the Indian craft. Her recent project for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani was critically acclaimed and depicted the ensemble from the Persian and Maratha eras of Indian History.
AWARDS
Anju Modi has won Filmfare Award for Best Costume Design in 2016 for Bajirao Mastani. She was also nominated for the Asian Film Award for Best Costume Design for the Same. The designer won big for Ram-Leela, bringing home Apsara Award for Best Costume Design, IBN Live Movie Award for Best Costume Design, Screen Weekly Award for Best Costume Design, and a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Costume Design.
COLLABORATIONS
Anju Modi has collaborated with several artisans all over the country. Some of the Bollywood stars she had closely worked with are Madhuri Dixit, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon, and Jaqueline Fernandes.
