When Ritu Kumar, the pioneer brand of Indian fashion, launched Ritu Kumar Home in 2009, it had the makings of a winner. She began her walk to fame by dabbling in hand-printed sarees in the 1960s. She received the most prestigious Padma Shri Award in 2013. Ritu Kumar’s outstanding work to revive Indian textile dying arts has also won her two other prestigious awards - Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres award by the Government of France (2008) and the L’oreal Paris Femina Women’s Achievement Award (2012). A student of art history, she accidentally stumbled upon fashion while studying museology. One day as her study trip took her to a village called Serampore in West Bengal, she met with a group of hand block printers who were without jobs as everything machine-made was quickly substituting handmade. The plight of these master artisans spurred her to provide them with an opportunity to earn. She gave them a few designs and asked them to print them on sarees. It formed the heart of her business venture - creating global designs by reviving the Indian textile legacy. Since then, from bridal wear - Ri Ritu Kumar to her western pret wear - LABEL Ritu Kumar and now Ritu Kumar Home, she has continued to promote hand-block textile printing and other age-old Indian weaving techniques through her designs.
