Tracing Its Origin

The history of tie and dye in Rajasthan is 5000 years old, and is among the oldest crafts of this state. The discovery of dyes dates back to ancient times, when our ancestors realised that colours could be naturally extracted from different parts of plants, leaves and flowers.

Tie & dye print was a part of trade, during the era of early trading. Some people believe that it was initially developed in Jaipur as ‘leheriya’; whereas other historians suggest that it was brought to India by the Muslim Khatris hailing from Sindh, who introduced it in Kutch. Even today, the Muslim Khatris are the largest community involved in the tie and dye business.

The exquisite and exclusive traditional design passes down from one generation to the other making the craft more enchanting with each generation.

How It’s Done

Let us understand what is tie & dye and how it is done properly. The rigorous process of tie-dye is time-consuming with long periods of letting the fabric rest to dry. Tie-dye is done by resist dyeing textiles, fabric, or clothing which is made from knit or woven fabric, usually cotton and typically seen in vibrant colours with variations in patterns.

The fabric to be dyed is knotted very tightly at different points, then coloured with striking shades. When it goes for dyeing, these threads or knots don't let that part catch colour allowing it to remain white or any colour that the cloth has. Once it is dyed, it is left for air-drying. This can take up some time depending upon weather conditions.

There are several patterns such as Leheriya, Bandhani, Handblock Printing and Ikat which are also the most famous works of Rajasthan and neighbouring state Gujarat.
