The soft and feminine shape of the anarkali made it a favourite of royals, aristocrats, and the common folk. Even today, it has captured the imagination of designers and wearers alike making it a constant on global runways, fashion shows, and Bridal Trousseau. Named after the famed courtesan of the Mughal court, its flowy silhouette and easy grace gives a dancer-like feel to anyone who wears it. Our comprehensive range effortlessly balances traditional aspects of chikankari such as its floral motifs and fine embroidery with modern design elements such as bold silhouettes and vibrant colour palettes.
The Mughal empire gave rise to an era of beautiful art, architecture, and fashion. Under its patronage, several artistic traditions such as chikankari, banarasi, and persian and garments such as the anarkali, salwar, and sharara were preserved and promoted throughout the country. We bring together two of the most popular imports from this time period in our elegant and ethereal collection of Lucknowi Anarkalis.
The subtle yet striking look of Lucknowi Anarkalis is achieved by hand by our artisans who have honed their skill over years. The designs they create are often inspired by nature and architecture. Thus, it is common to see patterns of lotuses, roses, jasmine creepers, foliage, and leaves along with arches, carvings, and sculptures as seen in Mughal monuments. Even the most intricate designs in chikankari are made from three types of stitches - flat stitches, embossed stitches, and jalli stitches. Flat stitches such as taipchi, khatao, pashni, gitti, and jangira are used for motifs, borders, and larger patterns. The details are then filled in with embossed stitches such as murri, pechni, and phanda that add texture and depth to the embroidery. The final touch is added with the most complicated addition, the jalli stitch, which gives chikankari its signature shadowy effect.
Check out exquisite chikankari work in our latest range of Lucknowi Anarkali Dresses. Chikankari derives its name from the Persian word ‘chakeen’, which means creating delicate patterns on fabric. The signature embroidery is done by hand to create fine details that gives the fabric a dreamy, ethereal quality. Traditionally, chikan work was done with white threads onto white mulmul or soft muslin cloth. However, with the expansion of the industry, the artisans use different fabrics such as georgette, organza, chiffon, silk, tassar, and cotton as well as yarn of pastel shades such as pink, blue, orange, and yellow.
Perfect for a day event, steal the show in a blush pink lucknowi anarkali set made in georgette, net and modal base with mirror and sequin embellishments. Dress up for an evening affair in an ivory long jacket in a decadent lucknowi georgette and net base, worn over a simple but stunning white anarkali dress.
