The rich history and legacy of Brown Banarasi Lehengas & Brocade Banarasi silks
Brocade weaving is a traditional handloom found all over in India. The technique is used in Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh in the south, in Murshidabad and Assam in the east, in Kutch, Surat and Ahmedabad in the west as well as in present-day Pakistan and Bangladesh. However, the finest and most intricate iterations of brocaded fabrics are found in the fabled city of Varanasi in north India. From being used for wedding outfits to offerings to gods to decor for a royal room, Banarasi brocades was the ideal choice due to its premium quality and intricate designs. Even within the vast range of Indian handlooms, Banarasi brocades stand out due to the painstaking detailing and complex technique needed to make a banarasi garment. Making just the base for banarasi sarees, banarasi unstitched lehengas, or banarasi dupattas can take up to 15 days to a month, sometimes even six months. They are often decorated with motifs of flowers, birds, animals, human figures, geometric motifs and even the Persian and Nagari scripts.
