Present day Varanasi continues the legacy of creating intricately designed and technically complex brocade silks which are highly coveted in India and around the world.
The rich history and legacy of Banarasi brocades, silks and Banarasi Kurtis
Banarasi weaving a true feat of diligence and excellent craftsmanship. Making a standard Banarasi Saree can take from 15 days to a month and sometimes up to six months; it is often made by three designers working on it simultaneously and uses nearly 5600 thread wires to create its intricate brocade and zari patterns. The most commonly found Banarsi patterns and motifs find their inspirations from nature and are broadly divided into seven variations - Jangla, Tanchoi, Tissue, Butidar, Cutwork, and Jamdani.

Banarasi brocades are celebrated across countries and generations due to their intricate patterns and complex techniques. The weavers are locally known as naqshabands or map maker. This is because they deftly navigate a maze of threads and create the most beautiful and detailed designs out of it. Some popular motifs seen in banarasi brocades are of intertwining floral and foliate motifs, known as ‘kalga’ and ‘bel’, a string of upright leaves called ‘jhallar’ on the border. Pernia’s brings to you a collection of Banarasi Silk Kurtis from fashion houses that honour these classic designs while putting their own twist on tradition.
