Jodhpuri Suit
A Jodhpuri suit is a formal suit worn by Indian men. As the name suggests, it originated in the Jodhpur region of Rajasthan. It is also referred to as a Bandhgala. It was popularized during the mid-19th and 20th centuries in India. The Jodhpuri suit consists of a constructed coat and trousers, teamed with a vest at times. It is suitable for occasions like weddings and formal gatherings during festivals.
History Of The Jodhpuri Suit
The design of the first-ever Jodhpuri suit came into being due to a wardrobe malfunction with Maharaja Pratap Singh of Jodhpur. His luggage went missing during his visit to England to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria in 1987. However, he decided not to wear western attire for the occasion. He approached a tailor at Savile Row and had him fashion a new attire.
When the guests of the event complimented him over the attire and asked him what it was called he replied with the name 'Jodhpur'
How They’re Made
The Jodhpuri suit is generally crafted from silk or suiting fabric. The fabric is lined at the stand collar and the buttons with embroidery. Wedding wear Jodhpuri suits are customised in plain, jacquard and Jamewari material.
The trousers are usually coordinated with the coat.
Significance & Symbolism
Ever since its inception, Jodhpuri suits have been associated with aristocracy and royal weddings in India. From President Abdul Kalam Azad to Shivraj Singh Patil and Prime Minister Modi, the royal Jodhpuri suit is a part of the fashion statement of Indian Aristocratic gentlemen.

The Jodhpuri suit or bandhgala is the shortened version of the Achkan Sherwani while the Angrakha is considered the predecessor of the Bandhgala.
